Barber Apprenticeship Program Overview

The Higher Image Hair Studio Barber Apprenticeship Program is a registered, work-based training program designed to prepare individuals for a successful career as a licensed barber. This program provides hands-on, real-world experience inside a professional barbershop while apprentices earn wages and accumulate the required hours toward state licensure.

Unlike traditional barber school alone, this apprenticeship allows participants to learn on the floor, working directly with clients under the supervision of licensed professionals. Apprentices develop technical skills, professionalism, and business awareness in a live shop environment.

Program Structure

The apprenticeship is structured around a progressive training model that combines:

  • Paid on-the-job training

  • Mentor-guided skill development

  • Documented hour tracking and wage progression

  • Alignment with state and federal apprenticeship standards

Apprentices advance through defined stages as their skills, responsibilities, and technical proficiency increase.

Training Focus Areas

Throughout the program, apprentices receive instruction and hands-on experience in:

Technical Barbering Skills

  • Haircutting fundamentals and advanced techniques

  • Fades, tapers, and blended styles

  • Beard grooming and straight-razor services

  • Sanitation, safety, and tool maintenance

Client & Professional Skills

  • Client consultation and communication

  • Time management and workflow

  • Professional conduct in a working barbershop

  • Building client retention and trust

Business & Career Development

  • Understanding commission structures and shop operations

  • Customer service and professionalism

  • Long-term career planning within the barbering industry

Work Schedule & Training Environment

Apprentices train in an active, professional barbershop setting during scheduled work hours. Training occurs under the supervision of licensed barbers who serve as mentors and instructors. Apprentices are gradually given increased responsibility as they demonstrate competency and consistency.

Wages & Progression

Apprentices are paid while participating in the program. Starting wages are set at an entry level and increase as the apprentice progresses through the program and reaches defined milestones. Wage progression is based on:

  • Hours completed

  • Skill development

  • Professional conduct and reliability

  • Program benchmarks

Licensing & Completion

Upon successful completion of the required training hours and competencies, apprentices are prepared to meet the eligibility requirements to test for state barber licensure. Completion of the apprenticeship supports a smoother transition into full-time licensed barber work.

Commitment & Expectations

This program is designed for individuals who are serious about barbering as a profession. Apprentices are expected to:

  • Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality

  • Follow shop policies and professional standards

  • Actively participate in training and mentorship

  • Uphold cleanliness, safety, and client service standards

Enrollment & Availability

Enrollment is limited to ensure quality training and one-on-one mentorship. Interested applicants must submit an interest form and complete an initial screening before acceptance.
